Tony Nieto is a leader in technology and innovation with over 25 years of experience in academia and industry. He is the Director of the FLS Technology and Research Center in Salt Lake City and serves as Adjunct Professor at the University of Utah, Department of Mining Engineering.
Nieto has held various prestigious academic and executive positions globally, including roles in the United States, Australia, Mexico, and Africa. Before his current appointment, he was the Chief Technology Officer at The Mining Collaborative Research Center in Australia, he has also served as Vice President of Innovation & Technology at Gold Fields, and as Global VP of Engineering & IT with Laureate International.
In academia, Dr. Nieto served as Chair and Full Professor at Wits University, as well as a Professor at Penn State University. Dr. Nieto's expertise focuses on corporate technology strategies, and applied innovation.
He holds a Ph.D. and MSc from the Colorado School of Mines, an MSc in Geostatistics from the École des Mines de Paris, and a BSc in Mining & Metallurgy Engineering from the Guanajuato School of Mines. Dr. Nieto is the author of the book, The 5S Innovation Model for the Minerals Industry, published in January 2024, and he is a co-author of the SME Minerals Engineering Handbook.
Tony Nieto has authored over 100 journal articles worldwide. Nieto is QP by the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America and is a member of the US Society for Mining, Metallurgical, and Exploration Engineering. He was inducted into Mexico's National Academy of Engineering in 2018.
Nieto has been featured in various news and media outlets, including Newsweek and Mining Magazine. He is a frequent speaker on mining innovation and technology at conferences and events globally.
